Biography

Candace N. Newell is an attorney, former educator, and public servant who has represented Louisiana House District 99 in the Louisiana House of Representatives since January 2020. She is Of Counsel at the law firm Daly & Black, P.C., where she continues to practice law alongside her legislative service.

Before her election to the Legislature, Candace built a career grounded in service. As a teacher, she worked in classrooms at France Gaudet Elementary, East New Orleans Education Center, and the High School District Learning Center, working directly with students and families. She began her career in government as an intern with the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, later serving as a legislative aide in the Louisiana State Senate and as a legislative aide to Representative Wesley Bishop, gaining firsthand experience in constituent services, legislative research, and public policy.

Candace was raised in New Orleans by her parents, Bernard “Bunny” Newell and Wanda Frederick Newell, and is a proud graduate of Southern University at New Orleans, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Criminology, before earning her Juris Doctor from Southern University Law Center.

As a legislator, Candace has championed education, criminal justice reform, economic opportunity, healthcare access, and community development. She is running for judge because New Orleans deserves a judge with real legal experience, deep community ties, and an unwavering commitment to fairness and equal justice under law.
